You have come back with a stronger voice than I had heard before -- not blunt and certainly not offensive, and yes, more "New York"! You have always had strongly held opionions and convictions, but now you speak with more knowledge and authority. Even as you have more questions about such deeply human differences as religion and faith. It is wonderful to have you back home. I hated to hear about the loss of your research work. Make a resolution to keep your work on TWO thumb drives from now on, even though you have the extra hassle of syncing them daily. Their conclusion was that many people still believed in the magic of the ANC, and felt that the party might yet have something to offer the country.
We love you, we miss you. We're looking forward to your homecoming -- knowing that you'll race down to Corvallis, but we hope to see you on the bounce, when OSU finals are over. Miss you so muc...Love you, love you, love you baby! Miss you so much. Very grateful to hear about the impact a big change in others is having on you. I was reflecting on that when I read one of your earliest entries -- you were annoyed b/c some of the kids were so clueless. I remember being your age, growing up in the middle of Iowa and traveling a lot, but only with my family. Then I went to Europe for summer school, and then I went to college. I remember many times being in groups where the consensus was that I was hopelessly clueless. But that's just b/c they were city kids, and had city sensibilities. They would have been at sea in the country.
Time goes by, and people change as they are exposed to different ways of living. Everyone has to go at their own speed. The group only goes as fast as its slowest member. Just think, the Dahli Lama is pledged to incarnate until the very last person is ready to wake up. That's dedication to a cause.
We love reading about your travels, and seeing your photos. John and I were just commenting last night that we feel we have gotten to know the real Lila through this blog. Until now, we have known the family/clan Lila with her excellent communication skills and empathy. Now we know the passionate and driven Lila -- devoted to social justice and a better world. We could not be prouder!
Love always,
YOM/MILmiggiepdxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04567641620413742811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7737580457200633914.post-65913546409423489662009-04-05T09:46:00.000-07:002009-04-05T09:46:00.000-07:00Spectacular pictures, Lila. What about female gential cutting? Cultural relativism would hold that you can't really comment about that.

Niftily, though, the new trend in anthro is to throw off the shackles of scientific objectivity. Basically, we recognize that as anthropologists, we come to the field with biases, beliefs, ideologies, and we don't have to pretend that we as ethnographers are neutral and objective. Because who is? And so you get into situations where you can study something like female genital cutting, or slavery, etc., and not have to treat it like it's a neutral issue.

But still, I feel uncomfortable telling any cultural that they should or shouldn't behave how I think is right.

Angst!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7737580457200633914.post-48360441454371241292009-03-26T23:23:00.000-07:002009-03-26T23:23:00.000-07:00John & Mignon,Thank you so much for both of yo...John & Mignon,
Thank you so much for both of your comments, they made my morning. Both of you mean so much to me & I'm glad to have you as family. :)Lilahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07234509484249590754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7737580457200633914.post-72152990126614837892009-03-26T10:27:00.000-07:002009-03-26T10:27:00.000-07:00Om gam Ganesaya namaha.Om ayim srim hrim Saraswati...Om gam Ganesaya namaha.
Om ayim srim hrim Saraswati devyai namaha.
Om santih santih santih.
Love you so much, dear Lila.
MIL/YOMmiggiepdxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04567641620413742811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7737580457200633914.post-65810105564386149272009-03-25T11:42:00.000-07:002009-03-25T11:42:00.000-07:00Lila darlin' -- This is simply stunning, a fascina...Lila darlin' -- This is simply stunning, a fascinating post! Don't you ever apologize for length!! What a great read this is to see the world through your clear, just and compassionate eye. This post is uplifting and worthy of very wide readership. You should DEFINITELY get your journals published on your return. I am currently reading Paul Theroux's new book "Ghost Train to the Eastern Star" abut his train trek throughout Eastern Europe, all parts of Asia and South Africa, and I find your journal every bit as revealing of national character and customs and true insight. He is a master of the "telling detail" and so are you ... every bit as much. THANK YOU. KEEP IT UP. This is education at its very best.
